HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 15, 2008) – Jacksonville (Fla.) Grand Prix Chairman Rick Mansfield and Johan Schwartz, President of Endurance Karting, announce the Sixth Annual Jacksonville Grand Prix six-hour endurance go kart race benefiting the Spina Bifida Association of Jacksonville will be held Saturday, April 5 at 103rd Street Sports Complex.
A portion of the race’s entry fee will benefit the Spina Bifida Association of Jacksonville. More than 120 teams consisting of Endurance Karting’s regular competitors and members of Jacksonville-area car clubs and businesses have participated throughout the first five years of the event and have raised $80,000 for the Spina Bifida Association of Jacksonville. Jacksonville Grand Prix and Endurance Karting representatives hope to reach $100,000 raised for this deserving charity. According to the national Spina Bifida Association, spina bifida is a neural tube defect that occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy. It affects 3,000 births per year in the United States, an average of eight births per day.
One such individual affected by Spina Bifida is Lindsey Webber, granddaughter of world-renowned Road and Track contributor, Bil Warner. Warner actively supports Jacksonville charities. He founded and chairs the Amelia Island Concours, which benefits Jacksonville Hospice. Warner eagerly accepted Mansfield’s proposal to create a motorsports event to benefit a disease that impacted his family, and together, the pair made the Jacksonville Grand Prix a reality. Warner has since provided a number of entries for the event each year and has contributed $20,000 to the Spina Bifida Association of Jacksonville.
The Jacksonville Grand Prix is open to drivers of any skill level, and no special licenses or experience is required. Endurance Karting will provide all go karts and safety equipment necessary for the race and will brief drivers on race procedures before the race begins. Participants on each team will share driving duties throughout the six-hour race.
While prior racing experience is not required, drivers who want to improve or obtain racing skills are welcome to participate in Endurance Karting’s Race School Friday, April 4. The professionally-taught school covers the fundamentals of racing, including passing and side-by-side racing. Additionally, Endurance Karting will host a 1.5-hour race and a Family Camp Sunday, April 6. The Family Camp is similar to the Race School, but it is open to children 8 years of age and older, who stand at least 4 foot, 10 inches tall.
