| POLE POSITION AND A PODIUM FINISH FOR LANDO AT PF INTERNATIONAL |
Glastonbury
racer Lando Norris showed his pre-season intentions and overcame arctic
conditions this weekend to claim his first pole-position of the year. The
Millfield School pupil completed the meeting by taking a podium result on the
final lap at the PF International Circuit near Newark in Nottinghamshire. This
successful weekend coming just seven days after taking his first victory in the
Rotax Mini-Max category at the same venue. |

It was a good weekend and the last one was my first race victory in
the class. To have two good meetings back-to-back this soon in the season is
really good, said the 12 year-old.
On
Friday Lando took to the track for testing and was happy with the balance and
speed of the kart before official practice got underway. In dry, sunny
conditions he was consistently one of the fastest in the category, occasionally
topping the time sheets during the course of the day.
However, on Saturday evening snow began to fall and by the time Lando
and the team had woken on Sunday there was several centimetres of snow across
the circuit. The PF International and Trent Valley Kart Club team worked hard
throughout early morning, suceeding to clear sufficently that, albeit delayed,
the meeting would still go ahead.
Despite
the circuit being effectively different to his practise in the initial part of
the weekend, Lando took just five minutes of running to set what would be an
unbeatable time and claim pole-position.
It felt really good the moment I went out in the wet on Sunday
morning, he said. I went for it very quickly and it felt great to claim my
first pole position in Mini Max against some very experienced opposition, he
added.
Despite a great start in the
pre-final he wasn't able to hold the lead and as the chequered flag fell he
crossed the line in third place. In the final he maintained his position but
followed with a minor blunder, dropping him to sixth.
A great recovery drive allowed him to re-take one place, and heading
into the final lap he was chasing down the two drivers ahead. With only a
handful of corners left to go he decided to go for a late braking pass and took
both of his rivals in one move, clinching the final podium
place.
I was a long way back when I went
for the pass to be honest, said Lando reflectively. I made a small error early
in the race and it cost me. But the drive back was really good and it was great
to take the last podium place on the final lap.
Lando now has only two months before the first of his main UK
campaigns, the Formula Kart Stars British Championship, begins in April.
However, before then, he will be back in action at another pre-season club
meeting at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire.
It was a great weekend last weekend when I took my first race
victory. he said. It has been another one this weekend too. I would like to go
to Kimbolton and keep my results going, he added.
